The Nk’Mip Expansion is an 8000 SF addition to the award winning Nk’Mip Desert Cultural Centre. The expansion includes a Class A exhibition and event space; greatly increasing the ability of the centre to host world class exhibitions while also providing a flexible space to host a variety of events. Working closely with the NK’Mip Desert Cultural Centre team and Osoyoos Indian Band elders, the expansion was envisioned as a transition through the earth (the existing building) and into the light (the addition). OIB elders, together with the design team created a design concept in the nsyilxcən language:
iʔ n̓ɬqʷmin [embedded] aʔ cnq̓aʔulaʔxʷ [in the earth] txʷar̓kstms [reaching] iʔ stk̓masq̓t [for the sky].
Taking advantage of an integrated design process, this project was designed in close collaboration with Greyback Construction, increasing cost certainty and schedule certainty for the Osoyoos Indian Band (OIB).
