Located in Prince Rupert, BC. This Community Band Shell maximizes performance flexibility while adapting to the rugged environment of its Pacific Northwest context. Authentic, welcoming, local, and iconic emerged from our community led design process as the project's guiding principles and form the basis of the design. Rooted in the tradition of coastal infrastructure while taking cues from the vernacular aesthetic of theatrical spaces, the structure is clad in aluminum pipes, welded together like a boat, a link to the local boat building industry. The large doors are light enough to be pushed by a single person into preset positions, creating a range of stage sizes accommodating all types of performance while enclosing green room space on both sides of the stage. The aluminum shell and wood ceiling are shaped to reflect sound out to the audience, supporting unamplified performances. Prioritizing local repairability while creating a distinct hub for the performance arts, the Band Shell embodies its unique, remote context; celebrating this resilient community.
This project received the Unbuilt award for design excellence at the 2025 AFBC Awards
